A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ichirakutei Eisui, depicting the courtesan Tsukioka of Hyōgoya with delicate floral details.
This woodblock print by Ichirakutei Eisui depicts the courtesan Tsukioka of the Hyōgoya establishment. Eisui was a student of Torii Kiyonaga and active during the late eighteenth century. His work focuses on the bijin-ga genre, which translates to pictures of beautiful women. This specific print exemplifies the refined aesthetic of the period, featuring a close-up composition that emphasises the subject's facial features and elaborate hair ornaments.
The courtesan is shown in a moment of quiet contemplation, interacting with a hanging lantern. The inclusion of chrysanthemums, which drape across her shoulder, adds a seasonal element to the composition. The lines are precise and delicate, characteristic of the ukiyo-e tradition, while the colour palette remains muted, relying on subtle tones of pink, brown, and soft yellow to create a sense of harmony. The background is kept minimal, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the figure and her immediate surroundings.
Eisui is known for his ability to capture the individual character of his subjects, moving away from the more generic depictions often found in earlier prints. The hanging chain of the lantern provides a vertical element that balances the curve of the courtesan's posture. This piece is a fine example of the technical skill involved in Edo-period printmaking, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in works of great precision. The print offers a glimpse into the fashion and cultural life of the Yoshiwara district, where such women were celebrated figures. It remains a classic example of the refined style that defined the late eighteenth-century print market in Japan.
