A detailed 1792 engraving by Georg Sigmund Facius after Paulus Potter, depicting a pastoral scene with a herdsman and his livestock.
This fine art print is an etching and engraving by Georg Sigmund Facius, published in 1792. It reproduces a painting by the Dutch Golden Age master Paulus Potter. The composition depicts a herdsman leaning against a tree, observing his livestock, which includes a prominent bull, a cow, and several sheep resting in the foreground. The scene is set within a wide, open field under a dramatic, cloud-filled sky, characteristic of the Dutch pastoral tradition.
Facius, working alongside his brother Johann Gottlieb Facius, was a skilled engraver based in London. They were frequently commissioned by the publisher John Boydell to translate oil paintings into print form for a wider audience. This specific work demonstrates the technical precision required to replicate the textures of animal fur, the rough bark of the tree, and the atmospheric depth of the distant horizon using only black ink on paper. The engraving captures the quiet observation of rural life, a subject that remained popular among collectors in the late eighteenth century.
The print retains the original publication details at the base, noting its origin from the collection of the Prince of Orange and its publication by Boydell at the Shakespeare Gallery in London. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume and light, allowing the viewer to distinguish between the soft wool of the sheep and the muscular form of the bull. This piece offers a window into the eighteenth-century practice of disseminating European masterworks through high-quality printmaking, preserving the composition of Potter for those who could not access the original painting.
