An etching by Paulus Potter from 1649, depicting a herd of cattle in a rural setting with a cowherd in the distance.
Paulus Potter, a Dutch painter and etcher, specialised in the depiction of animals within their natural surroundings. This etching, dated 1649, demonstrates his technical precision and his focus on the rural life of the Netherlands during the seventeenth century. The composition features a small herd of cattle positioned near a water source, with a cowherd visible in the middle distance.
Potter employs a variety of line weights to define the textures of the animals, the foliage, and the distant horizon. The foreground is occupied by a standing cow and a recumbent companion, rendered with anatomical accuracy. The background includes a gnarled tree and a cloudy sky, elements that provide a sense of atmospheric depth. The artist's signature and the date are inscribed in the lower left corner, a common practice for his printmaking work.
This work reflects the broader interest in pastoral themes that occupied many Dutch artists of the period. Potter was particularly noted for his ability to capture the individual character of his subjects, moving away from purely symbolic representations of livestock. The etching process allowed him to experiment with light and shadow, creating a tonal range that gives the scene a sense of physical presence. By focusing on the mundane activities of a cowherd and his animals, Potter elevated these subjects to a primary position in his art. This print remains a representative example of his brief but productive career, during which he became one of the most recognised figures in the development of animal painting in Europe.
