A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Gerard de Jode depicting the creation of Adam, surrounded by a variety of animals.
This engraving by Gerard de Jode depicts the biblical account of the creation of Adam. The composition features a central interaction where the Creator breathes life into the first man. The scene is populated by a variety of animals, including a lion, a stag, and various birds, which surround the figures to signify the natural world coming into existence. In the background, a secondary scene shows the creation of Eve, maintaining the narrative flow of the Genesis account.
De Jode, a prominent cartographer and printmaker based in Antwerp, utilised the technical precision characteristic of late sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking. The line work is controlled and methodical, employing cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of the surrounding flora and fauna. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print provides a scholarly context, typical of the period's humanistic approach to religious iconography. The perspective is slightly flattened, common in engravings of this era, which prioritises the clarity of the narrative over atmospheric depth.
This work reflects the period's interest in natural history, as evidenced by the careful rendering of the diverse animal species. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical proportion, influenced by the broader European artistic trends of the time. The print serves as a record of the technical capabilities of the Antwerp school, which was a hub for the production and distribution of high-quality engravings across Europe. The balance between the divine subject matter and the detailed observation of the natural world creates a composition that is both theological and encyclopaedic in its intent.
