A detailed hand-coloured copperplate engraving by Johann Sadeler I, depicting the biblical creation of Adam amidst a variety of animals.
This hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts the biblical account of the creation of Adam. As a prominent member of the Flemish Sadeler family of engravers, Johann was known for his technical precision and his ability to disseminate complex theological narratives through print media. The composition follows the conventions of late sixteenth-century Northern Mannerism, where figures are rendered with elongated proportions and a sense of theatrical movement.
The scene is populated by a diverse array of animals, reflecting the artist's interest in natural history and the encyclopaedic tendencies of the period. A lion, a turkey, and various livestock occupy the foreground and middle ground, surrounding the central figures of the Creator and the newly formed Adam. The Creator, draped in a voluminous robe, gestures towards Adam, who appears in a state of awakening. The background features a rolling terrain that recedes into the distance, providing a sense of scale to the narrative.
Below the image, Latin and Italian inscriptions provide context, citing the Book of Genesis. The application of colour, likely added by hand shortly after the printing process, enhances the clarity of the figures against the verdant setting. The engraving demonstrates the high level of detail achievable through the copperplate technique, with fine lines defining the textures of the animals' fur, the folds of the garments, and the surrounding foliage. This work is representative of the print culture in the Low Countries during the late Renaissance, where religious subjects were frequently produced for a growing market of collectors and scholars interested in both scripture and the natural world.
