A classic High Renaissance depiction of the Crucifixion by the Italian master Sodoma, featuring balanced composition and emotive figures.
Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, known as Sodoma, was a prominent figure in the Sienese school during the early sixteenth century. This work depicts the traditional scene of the Crucifixion, featuring Christ on the cross at the centre, flanked by figures in mourning. To the left, the Virgin Mary is shown in a state of collapse, supported by other holy women. Mary Magdalene kneels at the base of the cross, her posture conveying grief, while Saint John the Evangelist stands to the right, his hands raised in prayer.
The composition reflects the stylistic tendencies of the period, balancing human emotion with a structured, balanced arrangement of figures. The background features a distant, atmospheric view of a town and rocky terrain, typical of the Sienese approach to integrating religious subjects with naturalistic settings. Sodoma employs soft transitions in light and shadow, a technique influenced by the developments of Leonardo da Vinci, whose work he encountered during his time in Rome and Tuscany.
The colour palette is composed of muted earth tones, punctuated by the specific hues of the garments worn by the figures. The drapery is rendered with attention to the weight and fall of the fabric, adding a sense of volume to the composition. The figures are positioned to guide the eye towards the central figure of Christ, creating a clear narrative focus. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to combine technical precision with the emotional requirements of devotional art. The treatment of the sky, fading from a deeper blue at the top to a lighter horizon, provides a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the scene. As a fine art print, this work retains the subtle tonal shifts of the original panel, offering a clear view of the brushwork and the delicate expressions of the figures.
