A traditional Japanese triptych featuring the Daoist immortal Liu Hai alongside detailed peony studies, executed in ink and colour on silk.
This triptych by Sō Shiseki presents a central figure of the Daoist immortal Liu Hai flanked by two scrolls depicting flowering peonies. Sō Shiseki was a prominent figure in the Nagasaki school of painting, which acted as a conduit for Chinese artistic techniques and styles during the Edo period. His work reflects the influence of Shen Nanpin, a Chinese painter who introduced a highly descriptive, realistic approach to bird-and-flower subjects in Japan.
In the central scroll, Liu Hai is depicted with his characteristic three-legged toad, a creature associated with his legend. The figure is rendered with fluid, expressive brushwork that contrasts with the more structured, botanical precision of the surrounding peony scrolls. The peonies are executed with a focus on naturalistic form, showing the artist's attention to the delicate structure of petals and leaves. The composition balances the human element with the natural world, a common theme in the literati tradition where the scholar-artist sought harmony between spiritual figures and the flora of the earth.
The use of ink and colour on silk provides a soft, atmospheric quality to the background, allowing the subjects to emerge with clarity. The scrolls are mounted in a traditional format, which preserves the verticality of the original design. This work demonstrates the technical skill of Sō Shiseki in blending Chinese stylistic conventions with Japanese aesthetic sensibilities. The muted palette and careful attention to detail create a sense of quietude, typical of the Nanga movement's appreciation for the natural world and Daoist philosophy. The work remains an example of the cross-cultural exchange that defined the artistic output of 18th-century Japan, particularly within the circles of scholars and poets who favoured this refined, intellectual style of painting.
