A Dutch Golden Age history painting depicting the mythological discovery of the infant Erechthonius by the daughters of Cecrops.

Hendrick Heerschop, a Dutch painter active in Haarlem, produced this work in 1672. The composition depicts a classical mythological narrative from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The daughters of Cecrops, the mythical king of Athens, discover the infant Erechthonius in a basket. According to the myth, the child was born of the earth and guarded by serpents. Heerschop focuses on the moment of discovery, where the women react to the child with a mixture of curiosity and caution.

The painting demonstrates the stylistic traits common to the Haarlem school during the late seventeenth century. The figures are arranged in a staged, theatrical manner against a backdrop of classical architecture and a distant, atmospheric horizon. The lighting is managed to draw attention to the central basket and the reactions of the women. The artist employs a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the golden yellow of the seated woman's dress and the soft white of the standing figure's garment. The drapery is rendered with attention to volume and texture, reflecting the influence of contemporary Dutch classicism.

Heerschop, who was a pupil of Willem Claesz Heda, often incorporated elements of still life and genre painting into his historical subjects. This is visible in the careful rendering of the basket and the nearby vessel. The inclusion of a classical bust on a pedestal to the left serves to ground the scene in an antique setting, a common device in history painting of the period. The work remains a representative example of how Dutch artists of the era interpreted classical themes through the lens of their own technical traditions, prioritising clarity of narrative and balanced composition over dramatic movement.
