A reproduction of the fresco depicting the final moments of Adam, part of the Legend of the True Cross cycle in Arezzo.
The Death of Adam is a section of the larger fresco cycle, The Legend of the True Cross, located in the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo. Piero della Francesca executed this work during the mid-fifteenth century, demonstrating his mastery of geometric order and spatial clarity. The scene depicts the final moments of Adam, surrounded by his descendants, as he prepares to pass the seeds of the Tree of Life to his son, Seth.
Compositionally, the work is divided into distinct zones that balance the narrative elements. On the right, the elderly Adam is shown in a state of physical decline, supported by his family members. The figures exhibit the calm, statuesque quality characteristic of the artist, with drapery that falls in controlled, heavy folds. To the left, the narrative continues with the planting of the seed, a moment that links the death of the first man to the eventual salvation of humanity through the cross. The figures are arranged with a sense of mathematical precision, reflecting the artist's background in geometry and perspective.
Despite the losses to the plaster surface over the centuries, the underlying structure remains visible. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy ochres, soft blues, and pale flesh tones, creates a sense of solemnity. The bare tree, which occupies the centre of the composition, acts as a vertical anchor, dividing the two stages of the narrative while providing a stark, linear element against the soft, atmospheric sky. The figures are rendered with a focus on volume and mass, rather than emotional agitation, which is typical of the artist's approach to religious subject matter. This print captures the quiet gravity of the original fresco, offering a clear view of the balanced arrangement and the subtle interplay between the human figures and the surrounding environment.
