A dramatic Baroque study in ink and wash depicting the biblical scene of the death of Ananias by Alessandro Turchi.
This drawing depicts the biblical account of the death of Ananias, a narrative found in the Acts of the Apostles. Alessandro Turchi, a Veronese painter active in Rome, employs a dramatic composition to capture the sudden collapse of the figure at the centre of the scene. The work utilises a monochromatic palette of brown ink and wash, which allows the artist to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the drapery and the muscular forms of the figures.
Turchi was known for his refined approach to the Baroque style, often blending the influence of the Carracci school with his own distinct sense of theatricality. In this study, the figures are arranged to guide the viewer's eye toward the fallen Ananias, while the surrounding crowd reacts with gestures of shock and concern. The use of wash creates a sense of volume and depth, suggesting the architectural space in which the event occurs. The fluid lines of the pen work define the contours of the garments, demonstrating the artist's technical proficiency in preparatory drawing.
As a study, this piece offers a glimpse into the creative process of a seventeenth-century master. The application of wash provides a tonal range that mimics the effect of a finished painting, yet the visible chalk lines retain the immediacy of a sketch. The work is characteristic of Turchi's output, which frequently explored themes of moral consequence and divine intervention through classical composition. The balanced arrangement of the figures and the controlled use of light reflect the aesthetic priorities of the period, where clarity of narrative was as important as the technical execution of the human form.
