Jean-Léon Gérôme, a leading figure of the French Academic school, completed this work in 1867. The painting depicts the immediate aftermath of the assassination of Julius Caesar within the Theatre of Pompey. Gérôme chooses to focus on the emptiness of the chamber rather than the act of violence itself. The body of Caesar lies abandoned in the foreground, a small, solitary figure against the vast, cold architecture of the Roman senate.

The composition is defined by its rigorous perspective and the imposing scale of the Corinthian columns. These architectural elements create a sense of distance between the viewer and the conspirators, who are shown retreating into the shadows of the background. By placing the assassins at a remove, Gérôme emphasises the isolation of the victim and the clinical nature of the political act. The lighting is deliberate: a cool, diffused glow illuminates the marble floor and the fallen leader, while the conspirators remain obscured in the gloom of the portico.

Gérôme was known for his meticulous research and attention to archaeological detail. His approach to history painting favoured a polished, smooth finish, which was characteristic of the École des Beaux-Arts. This work demonstrates his ability to stage a narrative through spatial arrangement and light. The absence of theatrical gestures or exaggerated emotion allows the viewer to observe the scene with a sense of detachment. The painting remains a notable example of nineteenth-century historical reconstruction, where the artist sought to recreate the past with precision and technical control.
