A seminal Neoclassical history painting by Jacques-Louis David, depicting the final moments of the philosopher Socrates in his prison cell.
Jacques-Louis David painted The Death of Socrates in 1787, a work that defines the Neoclassical movement. The composition depicts the final moments of the Athenian philosopher, who was sentenced to death by drinking hemlock. Socrates sits upright on his bed, reaching for the cup while gesturing towards the heavens, maintaining his composure despite the impending end. His followers surround him, displaying various degrees of grief and despair.
The scene is set within a stark, stone-walled prison cell. David employs a strict linear perspective, with the horizontal bed and the grid of the floor tiles creating a sense of order. The lighting is dramatic, casting clear shadows that define the musculature of the figures and the folds of their classical drapery. The palette is restrained, relying on earth tones, ochre, and muted blues to keep the focus on the emotional weight of the narrative.
David drew inspiration from the writings of Plato, specifically the Phaedo, to construct this scene. The painting functions as a study of stoicism and moral courage. By placing the figures in a frieze-like arrangement, David recalls the aesthetic of ancient Greek relief sculptures. The inclusion of Crito, who sits at the foot of the bed, and Plato, depicted as an older man at the end of the bed, adds a layer of historical specificity. The chains on the floor serve as a reminder of the philosopher's imprisonment, yet his posture suggests a mind that remains free. This work remains a primary example of how eighteenth-century artists utilised classical subjects to explore themes of duty, sacrifice, and intellectual integrity.
