A striking 1920 composition by Winifred Knights, depicting a biblical flood through a modern, geometric lens.
Winifred Knights painted The Deluge in 1920, a work that secured her the Prix de Rome at the Slade School of Fine Art. The composition depicts a biblical catastrophe, yet the figures are dressed in contemporary early twentieth-century clothing. This choice creates a sense of dislocation, removing the narrative from a specific historical period and placing it into a timeless, existential realm.
The scene is marked by a rigorous, geometric structure. Knights employs a muted palette of greys, browns, and blacks, which contributes to the sombre, detached atmosphere. The figures are arranged in a rhythmic, almost choreographed procession, moving across the canvas towards higher ground. Their gestures are repetitive and stylised, echoing the influence of early Renaissance masters like Piero della Francesca, whom Knights studied closely during her time in Italy.
There is a distinct lack of emotional hysteria in the faces of the subjects. Instead, the tension is conveyed through the physical strain of their bodies and the stark, angular shadows cast upon the ground. The architecture in the background is simplified into clean, block-like forms, further emphasising the flatness of the pictorial space. By stripping away extraneous detail, Knights focuses the viewer on the collective human response to an overwhelming, inevitable force. The work remains a singular example of British modernism, demonstrating a precise control of form and a unique approach to narrative painting that avoids sentimentality in favour of structural clarity.
