A late Baroque masterpiece by Caravaggio, depicting the biblical moment of Peter's denial through dramatic light and shadow.
The Denial of Saint Peter is one of the final works produced by Caravaggio before his death. It depicts the biblical account of Peter denying his association with Jesus. The composition focuses on three figures: a soldier in a helmet, a young woman, and the elderly Peter. The soldier and the woman point towards Peter, who responds with a gesture of denial, his hands held against his chest.
Caravaggio employs his characteristic tenebrism, using a dark background to push the figures into the foreground. A single light source illuminates the faces and hands, creating sharp contrasts that define the emotional tension of the scene. The soldier is shown in profile, his ornate helmet catching the light, while the woman stands between the two men, her expression one of accusation. Peter appears aged and weary, his features rendered with a realism that avoids idealisation.
This painting demonstrates the artist's late style, which is marked by a more restrained palette and a focus on psychological interiority. The brushwork is looser compared to his earlier Roman commissions, yet the physical presence of the figures remains substantial. The narrative is stripped of extraneous detail, leaving only the interaction between the accusers and the accused. The work is currently held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It remains a primary example of the artist's ability to translate complex theological themes into immediate, human terms through the manipulation of light and shadow.
