A landscape by Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler, this oil on canvas shows the Dents du Midi mountain range from Chesières, Switzerland, rendered in cool blues and purples against a yellow sky.
Ferdinand Hodler, a Swiss painter born in 1853, is known for his symbolist and expressionist works. His paintings often feature themes of nature, mortality, and national identity. Hodler developed a style known as Parallelism, which involved arranging figures and elements in symmetrical patterns to convey harmony and unity. He died in 1918. This oil on canvas depicts the Dents du Midi mountain range from the village of Chesières in Switzerland. The composition is divided into three horizontal bands: a yellow sky, the blue and purple mountains, and a band of white clouds. The mountain range dominates the centre of the painting, its peaks rendered with thick brushstrokes and patches of snow. The sky is a uniform yellow, providing a contrasting backdrop to the cool tones of the mountains. The clouds at the bottom are painted with soft, swirling strokes, creating a sense of movement and atmosphere. Hodler's use of colour and form creates a sense of monumentality and grandeur, capturing the imposing presence of the Swiss Alps.
