A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Cornelis Visscher depicting the biblical departure of Abraham, rendered with technical precision and pastoral atmosphere.
This etching by Cornelis Visscher depicts the biblical narrative of Abraham preparing for his journey to Sichem. Visscher, a skilled printmaker of the Dutch Golden Age, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the varied line work used to define the textures of the animals, the clothing of the figures, and the atmospheric quality of the sky. The composition is organised around a central group of figures and livestock, with a divine presence appearing in the clouds above to guide the patriarch.
The scene is set within a pastoral environment, typical of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking, where biblical stories were often translated into familiar, rural settings. Abraham is shown in a moment of contemplation, surrounded by his flock, while other figures attend to the daily tasks of watering the animals. The contrast between the earthly activities in the foreground and the celestial light descending from the upper register provides a clear narrative focus. Visscher employs a sophisticated range of hatching and cross-hatching to create depth, allowing the eye to travel from the immediate foreground, where a figure kneels by a basin, to the distant hills in the background.
Cornelis Visscher was known for his ability to capture character and texture, skills that are evident in the rendering of the sheep and goats. The print reflects the period interest in combining religious themes with naturalistic observation. The light emanating from the angel serves as the primary source of illumination for the scene, casting soft shadows across the figures and the terrain. This work is a fine example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Dutch printmakers during the mid-seventeenth century, offering a glimpse into the intersection of faith and daily life as interpreted by artists of the era.
