A historical marine painting depicting the departure of King Charles II from Scheveningen in 1660, captured in the style of the Dutch Golden Age.
This work depicts the historical departure of King Charles II from the Dutch coast at Scheveningen on 2 June 1660. The event marked the monarch's return to England to reclaim his throne following the period of the Commonwealth. Hendrick de Meijer captures the scene with the characteristic attention to atmospheric conditions and maritime activity associated with the Dutch Golden Age.
The composition is anchored by a large, leafy tree on the left, which frames the activity on the shore. Figures are gathered near the water, preparing for the embarkation. The artist employs a muted palette of earth tones, ochres, and soft blues, which allows the expansive, cloud-filled sky to dominate the upper portion of the canvas. The light is diffused, suggesting a typical coastal day in the Netherlands, and reflects off the water with subtle precision.
De Meijer was known for his ability to integrate historical narrative with topographical accuracy. The vessels moored at the bank are rendered with technical care, showing the rigging and hull structures common to the period. The inclusion of horses and groups of people adds a sense of human scale to the vast coastal environment. This painting functions as a record of a specific political moment, yet it remains grounded in the tradition of Dutch marine art, where the interaction between land, sea, and sky is the primary subject. The work provides a window into the seventeenth-century maritime culture of the Low Countries, documenting the logistics of travel and the visual character of the Scheveningen coastline during a period of significant transition for the British monarchy.
