A detailed manuscript illumination depicting the Deposition of Christ, created by the Limbourg brothers for the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry.
This image originates from the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, a manuscript commissioned by John, Duke of Berry, and executed by the Limbourg brothers: Herman, Paul, and Jean. The work represents the International Gothic style, characterised by its clear outlines, refined figures, and the use of expensive pigments such as ultramarine blue and gold leaf.
The scene depicts the removal of Christ from the cross. The composition is structured around the central vertical axis of the cross, with ladders placed on either side to facilitate the descent. The figures are arranged in a manner that balances the emotional weight of the event with the formal requirements of the page. The palette is dominated by the deep blue of the sky, which contrasts with the varied colours of the garments worn by the figures below.
Each figure is rendered with attention to the texture of their clothing, from the heavy folds of the robes to the patterned fabrics. The faces are individualised, reflecting the grief and solemnity of the moment. The use of space is relatively shallow, typical of medieval manuscript illumination, where the focus remains on the narrative clarity of the scene rather than the creation of a three-dimensional environment. The gold halo surrounding Christ and the rays emanating from the top of the cross provide a spiritual dimension to the physical act of the deposition. This work remains a primary example of the technical skill and artistic vision present in early fifteenth-century French court art.
