The Destiny is a plate from the 1947 publication Jazz, a collection of prints by Henri Matisse. During his later years, Matisse turned to the technique of paper cut-outs, or gouache decoupage, as his health declined and he could no longer stand at an easel for long periods. This method involved painting sheets of paper with gouache, then cutting shapes directly from the coloured surfaces. The process allowed him to draw with scissors, merging line and colour into a single gesture.

This composition displays the characteristic flatness and bold chromatic choices of the artist's late period. The image is divided into two distinct sections. On the left, a large, organic black form dominates a pale pink field. The shape suggests a silhouette, perhaps a figure or a shadow, rendered with minimal detail. On the right, a more structured arrangement appears. A central blue rectangle is framed by a yellow border, set against a deep magenta background, which is itself enclosed by a green border. Within the blue rectangle, a small, white, abstract form sits, providing a stark contrast to the surrounding fields of colour.

Matisse used these cut-outs to explore the relationship between positive and negative space. The work avoids traditional perspective, relying instead on the tension between the flat planes of colour. The simplicity of the forms does not diminish their visual impact. Instead, the arrangement invites the viewer to consider the balance of the composition and the interaction of the hues. This print represents a shift in the artist's practice, where the physical act of cutting paper became a primary means of expression. It remains a clear example of his ability to distil complex visual ideas into essential, graphic elements.
