A dramatic oil painting by John Martin depicting the biblical destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah through a swirling, fiery inferno.
John Martin, a painter known for his dramatic and large-scale compositions, produced this work in 1852. It depicts the biblical account of divine judgment upon the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. The composition is dominated by a massive, swirling vortex of fire and brimstone that consumes the horizon, casting an eerie, golden-orange glow across the foreground. To the right, a jagged bolt of lightning cuts through the dark, turbulent sky, providing a stark contrast to the inferno below.
In the lower right foreground, the figures of Lot and his daughters are visible, fleeing the catastrophe. Their small scale relative to the overwhelming power of the natural and supernatural forces surrounding them is a hallmark of Martin's approach to the sublime. The artist employs a palette of deep browns, blacks, and fiery yellows to convey the intensity of the scene. The architecture of the city, partially obscured by smoke and flame, suggests a grand scale that is rapidly being reduced to ruin.
Martin's work often explored themes of human insignificance in the face of cosmic events. This painting is no exception, as it captures a moment of total annihilation. The brushwork is precise in its rendering of the architectural details, yet fluid and expressive in the depiction of the fire and clouds. The painting reflects the nineteenth-century fascination with apocalyptic imagery and the power of nature. It remains a clear example of the artist's ability to combine technical skill with a theatrical sense of drama, creating a visual narrative that is both unsettling and technically impressive.
