A striking cover illustration for Lovis Corinth's 1919 etching portfolio, depicting the chaotic and grotesque themes of the Satyricon.
This work serves as the cover illustration for the portfolio Das Gastmahl des Trimalchio, a series of fifteen etchings by the German artist Lovis Corinth. Published in 1919 by F. Bruckmann in Munich, the portfolio interprets the famous satirical episode from the Satyricon by Petronius. The text describes the extravagant and grotesque banquet hosted by the freedman Trimalchio, a scene that allowed Corinth to explore themes of excess, decadence, and human folly. Corinth employs a loose, gestural line quality that is characteristic of his later graphic work. The composition is arranged around the central title, with figures emerging from the surrounding space in a manner that suggests spontaneity rather than rigid structure. The figures, rendered with heavy, dark strokes, possess a raw and expressive quality. Their distorted features and fluid forms reflect the artist's move away from academic precision toward a more subjective, emotional mode of representation. The contrast between the dark, energetic ink lines and the neutral tone of the paper creates a sense of immediacy, as if the viewer is witnessing a preliminary sketch rather than a finished plate. By the time he produced these etchings, Corinth had moved past his earlier Impressionist influences to embrace a style that prioritised psychological intensity. The figures surrounding the title text evoke the chaotic atmosphere of the Roman feast, capturing the debauchery and absurdity inherent in the source material. This print provides a window into the artist's ability to synthesise classical literary themes with the anxieties and stylistic shifts of early twentieth-century Germany. The work remains a significant example of the artist's engagement with printmaking as a medium for narrative and expressive experimentation.
