A masterful study of light and shadow, this 1906 painting by Henry Ossawa Tanner captures the quiet, contemplative moment of the disciples at the tomb.
Henry Ossawa Tanner, an American painter who spent much of his career in France, produced this work during a period when he focused heavily on biblical narratives. The painting depicts Peter and John at the tomb of Christ, a moment of quiet observation rather than dramatic action. Tanner employs a restricted palette, relying on deep shadows and a singular, focused light source to define the figures of the two men. This technique, often associated with his study of Rembrandt, creates a sense of intimacy and psychological weight.
The composition is spare. The figures emerge from the darkness, their faces illuminated by an unseen glow that emanates from the tomb entrance. Peter, the older man with a grey beard, stands slightly behind John, his hand resting on his chest in a gesture of contemplation or apprehension. John, younger and more alert, gazes forward with an expression of intense focus. By stripping away extraneous detail, Tanner directs the viewer to the emotional state of the disciples. The heavy, dark background serves to compress the space, forcing the viewer to engage directly with the expressions and postures of the subjects.
Tanner was the first African American painter to gain international acclaim. His work often moved away from the genre scenes of his early career toward these atmospheric, spiritual subjects. This piece is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. It demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow, which he used to convey complex human responses to miraculous events. The painting avoids theatricality, opting instead for a grounded, human perspective on a foundational narrative of the Christian tradition.
