The Donkey in Tiger's Skin - Basavana

A classic Mughal miniature from the Tuti-nama, depicting a fable of a donkey disguised as a tiger, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold.

This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a collection of fifty-two stories told by a parrot to its mistress over successive nights. The manuscript is a primary example of early Mughal painting, produced under the patronage of Emperor Akbar. It reflects a synthesis of Persian stylistic traditions and indigenous Indian artistic sensibilities.

The scene depicts a moralising fable where a donkey, disguised in a tiger's skin, is exposed by its own braying. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The upper portion features two figures perched within dense, stylised trees, observing the scene below. The lower portion shows the donkey, draped in the striped hide, standing amidst a lush, verdant meadow. The artist employs a high horizon line, a common feature in this period, which allows for a detailed rendering of the foliage and the central narrative subject.

Basavana, one of the most celebrated painters in the imperial workshop, demonstrates a keen eye for character and movement. The donkey is rendered with a sense of frantic energy, its head tilted upwards as it brays, effectively conveying the moment of discovery. The colour palette is dominated by deep greens, earthy browns, and the distinct orange-brown of the tiger skin. The inclusion of gold accents and the precise application of opaque watercolour provide a sense of luxury typical of imperial manuscripts. The Persian calligraphy at the top of the page frames the image, integrating the text with the visual narrative. This work provides a window into the courtly culture of the sixteenth-century Mughal Empire, where literature and visual art were closely linked to provide moral instruction and entertainment for the nobility.
