Description
A refined Baroque depiction of the Virgin Mary surrounded by the Apostles, painted by the Venetian artist Carlo Saraceni.
Carlo Saraceni, a Venetian painter active in Rome, produced this work during the early seventeenth century. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary surrounded by the Apostles, a subject known as the Dormition. Saraceni was influenced by the tenebrism of Caravaggio, though his own approach often retains a lighter, more refined Venetian palette and a focus on graceful, emotive figures.
The scene is set within a dimly lit, architectural interior. The figures are arranged in a tight, circular formation around the central figure of the Virgin, who sits with hands clasped in prayer. Her blue mantle provides a strong colour contrast against the warmer, earth-toned garments of the surrounding men. The lighting is directed to illuminate the faces and gestures of the Apostles, capturing their varied expressions of grief, contemplation, and reverence. The architectural elements in the background are rendered with subtle shadow, providing a sense of depth without distracting from the primary narrative.
Saraceni demonstrates a mastery of human anatomy and drapery, with the folds of the clothing adding volume and weight to the figures. The interaction between the characters is quiet and restrained, avoiding the theatricality found in some other Baroque works of the period. This painting reflects the artist's ability to balance dramatic lighting with a sense of calm, devotional focus. The work remains a representative example of the Roman school during the transition from late Mannerism to the full Baroque style, showing how artists of the time adapted Caravaggesque techniques to suit more traditional, classical compositions.
