To the left, Saint Francis stands in a simple habit, his form rendered with a sense of physical weight and volume that departs from the flatter, more stylised conventions of the preceding Byzantine tradition. The architectural elements, including the campanile and the roof structures, provide a sense of scale and depth, guiding the viewer through the scene.

Giotto uses a palette dominated by earthy ochres, deep reds, and muted blues. The light source appears consistent, casting soft shadows that define the figures and the folds of their garments. The attention to human emotion and the naturalistic rendering of the figures mark a shift in European art, moving towards a more observational style.
