André Derain painted The Drinkers in 1911, a period when his work shifted away from the pure colour experiments of Fauvism towards the structural rigour of early Cubism. This composition depicts four figures gathered around a table, their forms simplified into geometric planes and heavy, dark outlines. The artist employs a restricted palette of earth tones, ochres, and deep shadows, which lends the scene a sombre, almost archaic quality.
The figures are rendered with a deliberate lack of traditional perspective. Their features are stylised, with heavy-lidded eyes and angular facial structures that reflect the influence of non-Western art, particularly African sculpture, which fascinated many Parisian artists at the time. The interaction between the men is minimal, as each figure remains absorbed in the act of drinking or handling their vessels. The composition is dense, with the figures overlapping to create a sense of compressed space that pushes the subjects towards the foreground.
Derain was a central figure in the early twentieth-century French avant-garde. While he is often associated with the radical colour choices of his earlier career, this work demonstrates his interest in the formal construction of the image. The heavy application of paint and the emphasis on solid, sculptural forms reveal his attempt to reconcile the lessons of Paul Cézanne with the emerging aesthetic of the Cubist movement. Andre Derain
Derain and Matisse spent the summer of 1905 painting together at Collioure, on the French Mediterranean coast. The canvases they produced, shown at the Salon d'Automne that autumn, prompted the critic Louis Vauxcelles to call them les Fauves, the wild beasts. A movement was born from one insult. Derain was twenty-five.
He was born in Chatou in 1880 and had originally studied to become an engineer. He met Matisse in 1898 while attending painting classes under Eugene Carriere. The Fauvist paintings are explosions of unnatural colour: trees in orange, water in violet, shadows in green. They were among the most radical works produced in Paris at the turn of the century.
By 1908, Derain was already breaking with the style. He turned to Cezanne, then passed through a Cubist phase, and by the 1920s had arrived at a fully Neoclassical manner. The wildest of the Fauves became one of the most conservative painters in France. The conservative turn brought financial success and mainstream praise. During the Second World War, the Nazis approved of his Neoclassical work. After the war, he was unjustly accused of collaboration. His reputation never fully recovered. He died in 1954.
