Jusepe de Ribera
A detailed 1628 etching by Jusepe de Ribera depicting the mythological figure of Silenus surrounded by satyrs and a donkey.
This etching, dated 1628, captures the mythological figure of Silenus, the tutor and companion to Bacchus, in a state of heavy intoxication. Jusepe de Ribera, a Spanish artist who spent his career in Italy, demonstrates his mastery of the etching needle through the varied textures of the scene. The composition centres on the reclining, corpulent form of Silenus, who holds a cup aloft while surrounded by satyrs and a donkey. Ribera employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, characteristic of the tenebrist style he adopted during his time in Naples. The anatomical precision of the figures, particularly the sagging flesh of the elderly Silenus, contrasts with the rough, hairy forms of the satyrs. The background features a large wooden vat, which reinforces the theme of wine and excess. The donkey on the right adds a touch of rustic humour to the scene, a common element in Ribera's depictions of classical subjects. The print is executed with a high degree of technical skill. The lines are precise, creating a sense of volume and weight in the figures. The shading is achieved through a combination of fine hatching and cross-hatching, which builds depth across the composition. This work was dedicated to Don Giuseppe Balsamo, as noted in the inscription at the bottom of the plate. It remains a clear example of the artist's ability to translate the intensity of his oil paintings into the medium of printmaking. The scene is not merely a depiction of myth, but a study of human form and character, rendered with the unflinching realism that defined Ribera's approach to his subjects.
