A powerful lithograph by Ernst Barlach depicting a scene from Goethe's Erlkönig, rendered with expressive, gestural black ink strokes.
This lithograph by Ernst Barlach depicts a scene from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's ballad, Erlkönig. The composition captures the frantic flight of a father carrying his ailing son on horseback through a dark, atmospheric environment. Barlach employs heavy, gestural charcoal-like marks to build the forms of the figures and the surrounding gloom. The horse is rendered with powerful, rhythmic strokes, conveying a sense of urgent movement. The father and child are huddled together, their expressions reflecting the tension of the narrative.
Barlach, primarily known for his sculpture, translated his interest in human suffering and existential struggle into his graphic work. His use of lithography allows for a tactile, immediate quality, where the black ink creates deep shadows that swallow the background. The figures emerge from the darkness through sharp contrasts of light and shadow, a technique characteristic of his approach to printmaking. The work avoids fine detail in favour of expressive, simplified forms that communicate the emotional weight of the poem. By focusing on the physical closeness of the father and son, Barlach emphasises the vulnerability of the child against the supernatural threat of the Elfin King. This print is part of a series of illustrations Barlach produced for literary texts, demonstrating his ability to interpret classical themes through a modern, expressionist lens. The raw, unrefined application of the medium aligns with the artist's broader interest in the primal and the human condition, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation.
