A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the public execution of Hans Woutersz. van Kuyk and Ariaantje Jans in Dordrecht.
This etching depicts the public execution of Hans Woutersz. van Kuyk and Ariaantje Jans, which took place in Dordrecht in 1572. The artist, Hans van Kuyk, documents this grim historical event with a focus on the architectural surroundings and the gathered crowd. The scene is set upon a wooden scaffold, where the figures are positioned before a large audience. In the background, the silhouette of the Dordrecht skyline, including the Grote Kerk, provides a specific geographical context for the viewer.
The composition is structured to guide the eye from the dense assembly of onlookers in the foreground toward the central figures on the platform. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the clothing, the wooden structure of the scaffold, and the distant buildings. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and shadow, particularly within the folds of the garments and the underside of the platform. The figures are rendered with a degree of realism typical of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking, capturing the sombre atmosphere of the event.
This work serves as a visual record of a specific moment during the Dutch Revolt, a period marked by significant religious and political upheaval. By documenting the fate of these individuals, the print functions as a historical narrative, preserving the memory of the event for later generations. The inclusion of text at the base of the print provides further identification of the subjects and the date of the execution, confirming its purpose as a commemorative or informative document. The print reflects the technical proficiency of the period, demonstrating a command of perspective and detail that was common among Dutch etchers of the time.
