Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) was a German painter, engraver, and architect of the Renaissance. He is considered one of the main representatives of the Danube School, which favored expressive colour and imaginative depictions of nature. Altdorfer worked primarily in Regensburg, Bavaria, and is known for his religious and mythological scenes, as well as his pioneering work in pure, or 'unpopulated', landscape painting. His style combines elements of the Gothic tradition with Renaissance innovations. 'The Fall of Man' presents the biblical scene of Adam and Eve succumbing to temptation in the Garden of Eden.
