A detailed, modernist depiction of the artist's family farm in Catalonia, blending precise observation with a surreal, flattened perspective.
Painted between 1921 and 1922, The Farm represents a bridge between Joan Miró's early realist period and his later, more abstract visual language. The work depicts the family property in Mont-roig del Camp, Catalonia. Miró spent months on this canvas, documenting the site with a meticulous, almost obsessive attention to detail that contrasts with the dreamlike atmosphere of his later output.
The composition is organised around a central, stylised eucalyptus tree, which anchors the scene. To the left, the farmhouse structure is rendered with textured, weathered surfaces. To the right, a barn is shown with a cutaway view, revealing the interior activities and animals within. The ground is divided into distinct zones of earth, tile, and vegetation, creating a flattened perspective that prioritises clarity over traditional depth. Every element, from the watering can and the newspaper in the foreground to the distant hills, is treated with equal focus.
This painting captures a specific moment in the artist's career, reflecting his deep connection to his Catalan roots. It is a catalogue of rural life, rendered through a lens that is both objective and highly personal. The clear, bright blue sky and the presence of a small, pale moon suggest a timeless, suspended quality. While the work contains recognisable objects, the precise arrangement and the lack of shadows give the scene a surreal, constructed appearance. It remains a primary example of how Miró transformed everyday observations into a structured, symbolic reality, moving away from the conventions of academic painting to develop a unique vocabulary of form and colour.
