A detailed colour lithograph by Max Kurzweil depicting a farrier at work in a smithy, capturing the quiet industry of early 20th-century life.
Max Kurzweil, a founding member of the Vienna Secession, produced this work during a period when the movement sought to integrate fine art with everyday life. The Farrier depicts a quiet, industrious scene at a smithy. A heavy draught horse stands patiently while a worker attends to its hoof. In the background, the glow of the forge illuminates the interior, where other figures work with metal. The composition balances the domestic scale of the workshop with the physical presence of the animal.
Kurzweil employs a controlled palette, using muted earth tones to ground the scene in reality. The lines are precise, reflecting the technical discipline required for lithography. Unlike the more decorative tendencies of some of his contemporaries, Kurzweil focuses here on the dignity of manual labour and the specific textures of the environment. The tiled roof of the smithy, the wooden tools, and the leather harness are rendered with careful attention to their material qualities. The light source from the forge creates a subtle contrast against the cooler tones of the exterior, drawing the eye toward the centre of the activity. This print captures a moment of routine work, avoiding sentimentality in favour of observation. It provides a clear view into the working conditions of the era, documenting the relationship between the craftsman and the animal. The work remains a representative example of the graphic output produced by the Vienna Secession, demonstrating the group's interest in elevating common subjects through refined printmaking techniques.
