Franz Marc's 'The Fate of the Animals' (1913) is an Expressionist oil painting depicting animals in a fractured, chaotic composition, reflecting the anxieties of pre-war society.
Franz Marc's 1913 oil on canvas, 'The Fate of the Animals', is a powerful example of German Expressionism. Marc, a founder of the 'Der Blaue Reiter' (The Blue Rider) group, aimed to express spiritual truths through his art. He often depicted animals, believing them to be more innocent and connected to nature than humans. This painting, completed shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, reflects a sense of impending doom and destruction. The composition is fractured and chaotic, with sharp, angular lines and clashing colours. Animals, rendered in simplified forms, are caught within a web of splintered shapes. Red streaks, suggestive of fire or blood, dominate the upper portion of the canvas. The painting conveys a sense of fragmentation and violence, mirroring the anxieties of a society on the brink of war. The original was damaged during World War II, and later restored.
