A striking example of Georgian Naïve art, this piece by Niko Pirosmani depicts a traditional feast set against a moody, atmospheric valley landscape.
Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, created this work during the early twentieth century. He frequently utilised oilcloth as a surface, a material readily available in the taverns and shops of Tiflis where he lived and worked. This specific piece depicts three figures seated on the ground, engaged in a traditional feast. The composition is characteristic of his approach, featuring frontal figures with direct gazes, simplified forms, and a lack of conventional perspective.
The three men wear traditional Georgian attire, including tall fur hats, and hold drinking vessels. Before them, a spread of food is arranged on a white cloth. The background consists of a dark, moody sky filled with heavy clouds, contrasting with the green expanse of the valley. Pirosmani often painted on black oilcloth, leaving parts of the dark ground visible to define shadows and contours, which contributes to the atmospheric quality of the scene.
Pirosmani's work remained largely unrecognised during his lifetime, yet he is now regarded as a significant figure in Georgian art history. His style avoids academic conventions, favouring a direct, honest representation of his surroundings and the social customs of his time. The figures appear detached from their environment, creating a sense of stillness that is common in his portraiture and genre scenes. This print captures the specific texture and tonal depth of the original oilcloth painting, preserving the artist's unique application of paint and his distinct visual language.
