This woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyomasa depicts a dynamic scene set within a traditional Japanese interior. The composition is divided by the architectural elements of shoji screens, which provide a rhythmic backdrop for the figures. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, to organise the multiple figures across the foreground and middle ground.
The central action involves several figures engaged in what appears to be a theatrical or ritualised encounter. Their postures are expressive, with limbs angled to suggest movement and tension. The clothing, rendered with patterned textiles, adds visual texture to the scene. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of green, red, and soft ochre, which allows the line work to define the forms clearly.
Ishikawa Toyomasa was active during the mid-to-late 18th century, a period when the Ukiyo-e school produced numerous prints documenting both the kabuki theatre and daily life. This work belongs to a series representing the months of the year, a common theme in Japanese printmaking. The cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the specific month, while the artist's signature is visible in the lower left.
