Description
A modernist study by Bauhaus master Oskar Schlemmer, exploring the intersection of the human form, geometry, and mechanical theatre.
The Figural Cabinet (Das figurale Kabinett) is a seminal work by Oskar Schlemmer, created during his tenure at the Bauhaus in Weimar. This composition functions as a visual manifesto for his theatrical experiments, specifically the Triadisches Ballett. Schlemmer sought to reconcile the human form with the mechanical age, reducing the body to geometric components and abstract volumes.
The image presents a series of stylised figures arranged within a compartmentalised space. These forms resemble marionettes or mechanical dolls, reflecting the artist's interest in the intersection of dance, sculpture, and stage design. The use of flat, opaque black areas creates a stark contrast against the precise, thin lines of the figures. Colour is applied sparingly, appearing in controlled geometric segments that echo the primary palette often associated with the Bauhaus aesthetic.
Schlemmer viewed the stage as a space for the transformation of the human figure into a geometric entity. In this work, the figures are stripped of individual identity, becoming objects that occupy space according to mathematical logic. The inclusion of circular motifs and vertical stripes adds a rhythmic quality to the composition, suggesting movement and mechanical precision. By isolating these figures against a dark ground, Schlemmer directs the viewer to consider the relationship between the body and its environment. This piece remains a primary example of the Bauhaus approach to design, where the boundaries between fine art and performance are intentionally blurred. The work demonstrates a rigorous analytical approach to the human form, prioritising structure and spatial organisation over emotional expression.
