As the narrative unfolds, the brothers of Joseph are confronted with the evidence of the alleged theft, a ruse orchestrated by Joseph to test their loyalty. Gimignani captures the tension of the scene through a crowded composition where figures are caught in various states of shock, confusion, and distress.
The artist employs a technique typical of the Roman Baroque period, using brown wash to create volume and depth, while white gouache highlights provide a sense of illumination across the figures. The drapery of the garments is rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines, suggesting movement and emotional agitation. The figures are arranged in a manner that directs the viewer's eye toward the central action, where the sack is opened and the cup revealed.
