An early work by Paul Cézanne, this scene captures a group of figures by a riverbank, demonstrating his transition toward a brighter palette and structured brushwork.
Painted around 1875, The Fishermen (Fantastic Scene) represents an early phase in the career of Paul Cézanne. During this period, the artist moved away from the dark, heavy impasto of his youth toward a lighter palette and a more structured approach to composition. The work depicts a group of figures gathered near a riverbank, with a boat moored on the right side of the frame. A man in a straw hat occupies the foreground, while other figures, including women in period dress, populate the grassy area.
Cézanne employs a distinct application of paint, using visible, directional brushstrokes that suggest the form of the trees and the movement of the water. The colour palette relies on bright greens, deep blues, and earthy tones, reflecting his interest in the effects of natural light on the French countryside. Unlike his later, more analytical works, this piece retains a narrative quality, hinting at a social gathering or a leisure activity by the water. The composition is divided into clear zones, with the figures arranged to guide the eye across the canvas. The inclusion of a large, sail-like form on the right provides a vertical anchor, balancing the horizontal expanse of the river and the distant bank. This work offers insight into the artist's experimentation with light and structure before he developed his signature method of building form through colour modulation. It remains a clear example of his transition from the influence of the Romantics to the systematic observation that defined his later output.
