A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Abraham Bosse depicting the biblical parable of the five foolish virgins in a domestic setting.
Abraham Bosse, a French engraver and printmaker, created this etching as a moralising commentary on the biblical parable of the ten virgins. The scene depicts five women gathered around a hearth, their posture and activities suggesting idleness rather than the vigilance required by the narrative. Bosse captures the domestic interior with precision, documenting the fashion, furniture, and decorative arts of the seventeenth century.
The composition is structured around the fireplace, which serves as the primary light source, casting long shadows across the room. The figures are dressed in contemporary attire, reflecting the social status and habits of the period. Bosse uses fine lines to define the textures of the clothing, the stone of the fireplace, and the framed pictures hanging on the walls. A cat sits near the fire, adding a touch of domestic realism to the allegorical subject.
Below the image, French verses explain the moral lesson, criticising the women for their lack of foresight and their indulgence in leisure. The text notes that while they wait for the celestial bridegroom, they waste their time in sloth. Their lamps remain unlit, symbolising their spiritual unpreparedness. This work demonstrates Bosse's technical skill in etching, particularly his ability to render light and shadow to create a sense of depth within a confined space. His attention to detail provides a window into the daily life and cultural values of the era, while the inclusion of text integrates the visual narrative with a didactic purpose. The print is a characteristic example of his output, which often combined social observation with moral instruction.
