Alfred Wallis, a Cornish fisherman turned self-taught artist, produced this work during his later years in St Ives. His approach to painting was unconventional, often utilising discarded cardboard scraps and household paints. This piece captures a maritime scene with a direct, intuitive perspective that disregards traditional academic rules of scale and horizon.

In this composition, the vessels are arranged across the surface with a focus on clarity rather than spatial depth. The sailing ships in the background appear stacked above the steamships in the foreground, creating a flattened, map-like view of the harbour. Wallis relied on his memory of the sea, drawing upon decades of experience as a mariner. His work is noted for its honesty and lack of artifice, qualities that attracted the attention of Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood when they visited St Ives in 1928.

The monochromatic palette emphasises the graphic quality of the ships against the water. The lines are functional and descriptive, outlining the hulls and masts with a rhythmic, repetitive quality. By using the raw texture of the support, Wallis allowed the material to become part of the image. This print reproduces the original's stark contrast and the tactile nature of the artist's mark-making.
