An etching by Sébastien Bourdon depicts the Flight into Egypt, showing Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus fleeing Herod's Massacre of the Innocents. The work demonstrates Bourdon's skill as a draughtsman.
This etching by Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671) depicts the Flight into Egypt, a biblical episode recounted in the Gospel of Matthew. Fleeing the Massacre of the Innocents ordered by King Herod, Joseph leads Mary and the infant Jesus into safety. Bourdon, a French painter and printmaker, was among the founders of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. He spent time in Rome, where he was influenced by the art of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque periods. His style is characterised by a blend of classical and Baroque elements. The composition shows the Holy Family in transit. Mary, carrying Jesus, is positioned prominently, while Joseph guides the donkey. The figures are rendered with careful attention to detail, particularly in the drapery and facial expressions. The landscape is suggested with sparse lines, typical of the etching technique. Bourdon's skill as a draughtsman is evident in the precise linework and the effective use of light and shadow to create depth and volume.
