This work is a section of the fresco cycle located in the Chiostro Verde of Santa Maria Novella in Florence. Paolo Uccello, a painter known for his obsession with linear perspective, applied his mathematical rigour to this depiction of the biblical deluge. The composition is divided into two distinct scenes, showing the onset of the flood and the subsequent recession of the waters.

Uccello employs a monochromatic palette, known as terra verde, which gives the figures a sculptural quality. The scene is populated by numerous figures in various states of distress, clinging to makeshift rafts or struggling against the rising tide. The artist uses foreshortening to create a sense of depth, though the arrangement remains somewhat disjointed, reflecting the experimental nature of perspective during the mid-fifteenth century.

One observes the figures in the foreground, including a man in a turban and a woman with a child, who appear caught in a moment of quiet desperation. The architectural elements, such as the barrel, provide a sense of scale and spatial organisation. Uccello's approach to the human form is stylised, with elongated limbs and expressive gestures that convey the chaos of the event. The fresco has suffered from significant deterioration over the centuries, yet the underlying geometry and the artist's ambition to master three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface remain visible. This work provides a window into the technical challenges faced by Renaissance artists as they moved away from medieval conventions toward a more naturalistic representation of the world.
