A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Johannes Visscher depicting a pastoral scene of a couple crossing a ford with their livestock.
Johannes Visscher, a member of a prominent family of Dutch engravers, produced this etching during the seventeenth century. The work captures a pastoral scene, a subject that held considerable appeal for collectors of the Dutch Golden Age. It depicts a herdsman and a shepherdess crossing a body of water on a donkey, accompanied by cattle and a dog. The composition relies on the contrast between the figures in the foreground and the rugged, mountainous terrain that occupies the background.
Visscher employs a variety of etching techniques to define the textures of the scene. The water is rendered with horizontal lines, while the rocky slopes and the animals are articulated through dense cross-hatching and varied line weights. This approach creates a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective, typical of the period's interest in naturalistic settings. The figures are positioned to draw the eye across the water, suggesting a narrative of rural life and travel. The inclusion of the dog and the cattle adds a sense of movement and daily activity to the composition.
As an etcher, Visscher often worked after the designs of other artists, such as Nicolaes Berchem, who was known for his Italianate pastoral scenes. This print reflects the broader European fascination with idealized rural life, where the simplicity of the countryside is presented with technical precision. The print is a fine example of the graphic arts of the Netherlands, demonstrating the skill required to translate complex tonal values into a monochromatic medium. The work remains a clear representation of the period's stylistic preferences, focusing on the interplay between human figures and their environment.
