Description
The Forth Bridge sweeps over the Firth of Forth in russet cantilever steel, with calm water and a rocky shore catching the late-day light.
At The Forth Bridge, tall sandstone piers carry a lattice of rust-red girders above silvery tidal bands. The central arches rise high over the channel, then diminish towards low blue hills, while seaweed-edged boulders and pink thrift hold the near bank. Broad cloud forms leave pale intervals across the sky, giving the crossing room to dominate the water.
For people who cross the estuary or walk its shore, the structure fixes a familiar route between Edinburgh and Fife. Its shifting geometry changes with every step along the foreshore, from the heavy piers nearby to the narrowing spans beyond, and the tide keeps the whole crossing in view.
