A six-panel screen painting by Kano Motonobu depicting the Four Accomplishments, a traditional theme representing the essential pursuits of a scholar.
This work depicts the traditional theme of the Four Accomplishments: qin (music), qi (go), calligraphy, and painting. These activities were considered essential pursuits for the cultivated scholar in East Asian tradition. Kano Motonobu, a central figure in the development of the Kano school, employs a style that synthesises Chinese ink-wash techniques with Japanese decorative sensibilities. The composition is structured across a six-panel folding screen, a format that allows for a wide, panoramic view of the scene.
The figures are positioned within a serene, natural setting. A large, gnarled pine tree dominates the centre, providing a visual anchor for the scholars gathered beneath its boughs. To the right, rugged rock formations and a cascading stream suggest a mountainous retreat, while the left side opens into a misty, expansive vista. The use of ink wash creates a sense of depth and atmosphere, with lighter tones suggesting distant hills and darker, more defined strokes detailing the foreground elements.
Motonobu was instrumental in establishing the Kano school as a dominant force in Japanese art. His work often balanced the austere beauty of Zen-influenced ink painting with a more accessible, decorative quality suitable for the residences of the warrior elite. This screen demonstrates his ability to integrate human activity into a natural environment, creating a harmonious balance between the figures and the surrounding terrain. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the disciplined training characteristic of the Kano lineage. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation, inviting the viewer to engage with the scholarly ideals represented by the four activities. This piece remains a significant example of the transition toward the more formalised aesthetic that would define the subsequent Momoyama period.
