An early, enigmatic engraving by Albrecht Dürer from 1497, featuring four nude figures and complex cross-hatching techniques.
Albrecht Dürer produced this engraving in 1497, a period when he was refining his mastery of the burin. The work depicts four nude women standing in a confined, interior space. Their poses are varied, with two figures facing away and two facing towards the viewer, creating a sense of rotation. A sphere hangs from the ceiling, inscribed with the date 1497 and the letters O.G.H., the meaning of which remains a subject of academic debate. To the left, a small devilish figure peers from behind a doorway, adding an element of the uncanny to the scene.
Dürer employs a rigorous system of cross-hatching to model the musculature and volume of the figures. The light source appears to come from the upper right, casting shadows that define the contours of the bodies against the dark, enclosed background. The composition is dense, with the figures occupying almost the entire pictorial plane. The presence of a skull at the feet of the central figure introduces a memento mori element, common in Northern European art of the late fifteenth century.
This engraving demonstrates Dürer's early interest in the study of human proportions. While the figures possess a degree of classical influence, they also reflect the specific stylistic traits of the German Renaissance. The artist's monogram, the famous AD, is positioned clearly at the bottom centre. The print is a technical achievement in line work, showing the precision Dürer brought to the medium of copperplate engraving. It remains one of his most enigmatic early works, inviting interpretation regarding its allegorical content while displaying the artist's technical control over the copper plate.
