A refined woodblock print depicting the plum blossom, one of the Four Worthies, by the Japanese literati artist Nakabayashi Chikutō.
This print originates from a series depicting the Four Worthies, or Shikunshi, a traditional subject in East Asian art. The Four Worthies consist of the plum blossom, the orchid, the bamboo, and the chrysanthemum. Each plant represents a season and a specific moral quality associated with the scholar-gentleman. The plum blossom, shown here, signifies perseverance and resilience, as it blooms during the cold of late winter.
Nakabayashi Chikutō was a prominent figure in the Bunjinga, or literati painting, tradition in Japan. His work reflects a deep engagement with Chinese ink-wash painting techniques, adapted for the Japanese aesthetic. The composition relies on the economy of line and the balance between positive and negative space. The gnarled branches of the plum tree are rendered with varied ink tones, providing a sense of texture and age. The blossoms are drawn with delicate, precise strokes, contrasting with the heavier, wash-like application of ink on the main trunk.
As a practitioner of the literati style, Chikutō prioritised the expression of the artist's inner character over strict realism. The print demonstrates his mastery of brush control, where every mark serves a purpose in defining the form and movement of the subject. The monochromatic palette focuses the viewer on the structure of the branches and the rhythm of the composition. This piece is representative of the instructional manuals and woodblock-printed books that were popular among the educated classes in the Edo period. These volumes allowed for the dissemination of artistic techniques and philosophical ideals, making the study of nature accessible to a wider audience of students and collectors.
