A woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I titled 'The Fourth Month', depicting a genre scene of daily life in Japan. The print showcases the artist's skill in capturing the nuances of human activity and domestic settings.
Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825) was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist, best known for his depictions of kabuki actors and beautiful women (bijin-ga). He headed the Utagawa school for almost 30 years and greatly influenced the development of ukiyo-e. His work is characterised by its dynamic compositions, expressive figures, and attention to detail. 'The Fourth Month' presents a genre scene of daily life, likely depicting activities associated with the lunar month of April. The composition is divided into two distinct interior spaces. On the left, a man is shown preparing fish, surrounded by women engaged in domestic tasks. The right side depicts women in various poses, one with a child holding a dog. The figures are rendered with delicate lines and subtle colour variations, typical of ukiyo-e prints. The print offers a glimpse into the everyday life and customs of the Edo period in Japan.
