Walter Crane (1845-1915) was a British artist and book illustrator, considered one of the most influential children's book creators of his generation. Crane's illustrations are known for their decorative style, flat compositions, and use of colour. He designed wallpapers, textiles, and ceramics, in addition to his prolific output of books. 'The Frenchman' depicts a figure from the French Revolution, complete with tricolour sash, revolutionary weapons, and a Phrygian cap. The figure stands before a stylised French flag, with the word 'Liberté' emblazoned on it. The illustration is framed by a decorative border with motifs of axes and laurel wreaths. The text on the right side of the image references France's role in inspiring freedom and brotherhood, particularly in relation to Columbia (America). The overall design reflects Crane's interest in historical and political themes, combined with his distinctive aesthetic style.
