A lively genre scene featuring characters from the commedia dell'arte engaged in a game of bowls, rendered in pen and brown wash.
This drawing belongs to a series of works by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo depicting the life and adventures of Punchinello, the iconic character from the commedia dell'arte. In this scene, a group of Punchinelli, identifiable by their tall, conical hats and loose white garments, engage in a leisurely game of bowls. The artist employs a fluid, calligraphic line combined with delicate brown washes to define the figures and the architectural backdrop of a high stone wall.
Tiepolo captures the theatricality of the figures through their varied postures and gestures. Some lean forward in concentration, while others observe the play with exaggerated movements. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged across the foreground, creating a sense of depth against the plain wall. The use of light and shadow, achieved through the application of wash, gives the figures a sculptural quality despite the economy of the medium. This work reflects the artist's interest in the everyday activities of his fantastical subjects, moving away from the grand religious and mythological themes favoured by his father, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
The drawing is executed with a lightness of touch that characterises the artist's late period. The figures are rendered with a sense of humour and observation, typical of his satirical approach to the Punchinello narrative. The plain background ensures that the focus remains on the interactions and the specific poses of the characters. This piece provides a glimpse into the imaginative world of the Venetian artist, where the boundaries between reality and performance are blurred. It is a fine example of eighteenth-century draughtsmanship, demonstrating the artist's ability to create a narrative through simple, expressive marks.
